The World Association of Lesson Studies (WALS)

The World Association of Lesson Studies (WALS) bertujuan untuk mempromosikan dan memajukan penelitian dan praktik Lesson Studi dalam rangka meningkatkan kualitas pengajaran dan pembelajaran. Melalui kegiatan ini memunculkan kolaborasi riset, gotong royong dan pertukaran informasi di antara para peserta.  Kegiatan ini diikuti oleh peneliti pendidikan dan guru professional yang berkomitmen untuk meningkatkan kualitas pembelajaran.
Dewasa ini, Lesson Studi sebagai alat untuk belajar profesional kini dipraktekkan di banyak negara dan telah membantu sekolah-sekolah di seluruh dunia berkembang menjadi komunitas belajar. Konferensi tahunan ini, membawahi peneliti, mahasiswa, pemimpin sekolah dan guru dari berbagai negara termasuk China, Jepang, Singapura, Vietnam, Brunei, Swedia, Inggris dan Amerika Serikat untuk berbagi pengalaman dan praktek studi pelajaran mereka. Mereka juga memberikan kesempatan bagi peserta untuk mendiskusikan isu-isu saat ini yang berkaitan dengan pengajaran, pembelajaran dan penelitian tentang Lesson Studi.

Lesson Studi di Indonesia
Keterlibatan Indonesia dengan lesson studi telah berkembang secara bertahap dan kini menjadi bagian dari budaya yang ada di sekolah. Inti dari lesson studi pertama kali diperkenalkan oleh Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) melalui Indonesian Mathematics and Science Teacher Education Project (IMSTEP) (1998-2003) tetapi tidak diakui sebagai lesson studi sampai tindak lanjut IMSTEP (2003 -2005) dilaksanakan. Selanjutnya, the Strengthening In-Service Teacher Training of Mathematics and Science Education at Secondary level (SISTTEMS) (2006-2008) proyek mempromosikan pemberdayaan skala besar masyarakat belajar dan memulai pendekatan reformasi sekolah pada tingkat kabupaten. Dalam pelaksanaannya, SMP secara geografis berdekatan berada di bawah pengawasan Teacher Education Institutions (TEI), misalnya, kabupaten Sumedang, Bantul dan Pasuruan menjadi mitra strategis dengan Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia, Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta dan Universitas Negeri Malang masing-masing.
Keberhasilan pelaksanaan SISTTEMS mempromosikan pertumbuhan lesson studi dan menarik pendidik dan lembaga pendidikan di seluruh nusantara untuk melakukan itu sebagai suatu pendekatan terhadap pengembangan profesional guru. Departemen Pendidikan Nasional (Depdiknas), dengan dukungan JICA melalui PELITA 2009-2013, memperpanjang uji coba lesson studi tiga lainnya kabupaten / kota. Kota Padang, Kabupaten Banjar Baru dan Minahasa Utara berada di bawah pengawasan Universitas Negeri Padang, Sumatera, Universitas Lambungmangkurat, Kalimantan dan Universitas Negeri Manado, Sulawesi masing-masing. Depdiknas juga telah memfasilitasi 52 TEI di seluruh negeri dalam pelaksanaan lesson studi untuk perbaikan program pra-layanan mereka sejak tahun 2008. Selain itu, Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia telah berhasil dalam penyebaran lesson study di 16 kabupaten di provinsi Jawa Barat melalui proyek kemitraan sekolah-universitas. Sekarang, Provinsi Jambi di Pulau Sumatera telah menunjukkan minat dalam mengadopsi lesson study, setelah mendengar kisah sukses Jawa Barat.
Di Indonesia, lesson studi didefinisikan sebagai model pengembangan profesional untuk pendidik karena mereka studi yang mengajar dan proses belajar bersama-sama, berdasarkan prinsip-prinsip kolegialitas dan mutual learning untuk membangun komunitas belajar. Menurut Drs. H. Karso, M.M.Pd lesson studi adalah model untuk membina profesi guru yang berkelanjutan. Hal ini semakin dikenal di seluruh negeri sebagai pendekatan yang efektif untuk pendidikan guru, pengembangan profesional, dan reformasi sekolah. Sebagai lembaga terkemuka, Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia telah mempromosikan jaringan lesson studi dengan menyelenggarakan seminar nasional tahunan dan konferensi sejak tahun 2006. Beberapa ulama terkemuka di lesson study telah berbagi pengalaman dan keahlian mereka; mereka datang terutama dari Jepang, Singapura dan Malaysia. Sejak 2010, konferensi telah memperkenalkan bursa mengajar di mana peserta diamati pelajaran guru Indonesia dan Jepang dan budaya mengajar bersama.



Berikut Keynote Speakers dalam rangkaian acara WALS

1. Catherine Lewis


Currently director of lesson study research projects funded by NSF and IES and a senior research scientist at Mills College, Catherine Lewis comes from four generations of public school teachers. Fluent in Japanese, she has conducted research in Japanese and U.S. schools for 25 years. Her writings and videotapes, including Lesson Study: A Handbook of Teacher-Led Instructional Change and 'Can You Lift 100 Kilograms?' have introduced many U.S. educators to lesson study. A graduate of Harvard University (B.A.) and Stanford University (Ph.D.), she is author of more than 40 publications on elementary education and child development, including the award-winning book Educating Hearts and Minds: Reflections on Japanese Preschool and Elementary Education (Cambridge University Press, 1995).

2. Manabu Sato
Professor Manabu Sato - Professor of Gakushuin University and Professor Emeritus of The University of Tokyo, Director of the Humanities and Social Sciences Division of Japan Council of Sciences. He served as dean of the Graduate School of Education of The University of Tokyo from 2004 to 2006. He was also a visiting professor to the Harvard University and New York University, and an invited professor of El Colegio de Mexico and Berlin Free University. He was the past president of the Japanese Educational Research Association. Professor Sato has worked extensively and intensively with many schools and school leaders. He published more than 20 books, about 100 editorial books and nearly 200 academic papers. Many of his books and papers have been translated into English, French, German, Spanish, Chinese, Taiwanese, Korean and Indonesian. Professor Sato's multiple contributions have been recognized in the world. For instance, he was elected to be a member of National Academy of Education in the United States, and in 2009, he was appointed the Inaugural Fellow of American Educational Research Association. In addition, he was a winner of the Excellent Award of Asian Publishing Award 2012.
3. Didi Suryadi

Didi Suryadi is a Professor of Mathematics Education and Director of School of Post Graduate Studies at Indonesia University of Education. Since last decade, he has played a key role in Lesson Study research and development in Indonesia. His research interest has evolved from mathematical thinking to teacher thinking and its relation to student thinking. By grounding his endeavor into thinking processes, he introduced the idea of Metapedadidactic as framework for teacher thinking and Didactical Design Research as methodological approach to researching teaching-learning. His influential works have contributed to the enrichment of Lesson Study practice in Indonesia. He is now working closely with teachers, teacher educators and school leaders to promote thinking processes in educational practices.


4. Jan Vermunt

Jan Vermunt started as a Professor of Education at the University of Cambridge in October 2012. Before, he was a Professor of Teaching and Teacher Education at Utrecht University, The Netherlands. Previously he worked at several universities in The Netherlands and Belgium, among which the universities of Amsterdam, Leiden, Maastricht and Tilburg. He served as a member of the Executive Committee of the European Association for Research on Learning and Instruction EARLI from 2009 to 2013. With effect from 1st January 2014, he was elected as Editor-in-Chief of Learning and Instruction, one of the leading journals in the world in the fields of Educational Research and Educational Psychology.
Jan Vermunt is an educational psychologist whose research interests have evolved from the study of student learning and teacher learning as separate domains, to include the way teacher learning and student learning affect each other. Recently he co-edited the book 'Learning patterns in higher education: Dimensions and research perspectives', published by Routledge (2014).In January 2014 he became principal investigator of aUniversity of Cambridge research project on teacher learning and lesson study in mathematics higher order teaching and learning, in collaboration with the London Borough of Camden School Improvement Service, and funded by the London Schools Excellence Fund.
